Art and Tara
After receiving a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University in 1985, Art accepted an engineering position with NASA at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In 1993, he launched Art Maples Photography to pursue an interest in commercial and fine art photography. In 2002 Art relocated to the Washington DC metro area.

Art's commercial projects include product and portrait photography for local and national clients, while his fine art pursuits center around black and white, and infrared studies of Florida landscapes, still lifes and a major project to document the rebirth and restoration of the historical McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach, Florida.

Over the past several years, Art's engineering background and experience at NASA; a fascination with technology; and an interest in the early history of America's space program, inspired him to begin a photographic study of related infrastructures. Over time, continuing research and a desire to document forgotten and often hidden infrastructures in an artistic manner has resulted in an evolution of his original study to a larger and much more ambitious project - "Cold War Leftovers." In "Cold War Leftovers," Art has chosen to work entirely with black and white, and infrared film in an attempt to capture the often eerie nature of these decommissioned or abandoned sites.

Art is one of a small group of dedicated photographers that still uses a traditional large-format view camera to capture the subjects of his black and white fine art photography. His goal is to bring out the finest quality and detail in his images, therefore Art also hand processes his film and custom prints and tones all of the prints in his collection.
